South Carolina Precious Metals Tax Information

In South Carolina, most purchases of precious metals like gold, silver, platinum, and palladium are exempt from sales tax. This includes bullion, coins, and rounds. However, there are some exceptions:

  • Numismatic Products. Items with a value beyond their precious metal content due to rarity, condition, or historical significance may be taxable.
  • Accessory Items. Items such as holders, tubes or coin flips.
  • Processed Items. Precious Metals that have been processed by third parties into items valued on more than their Precious Metal content, such as jewelry, statues or colorized coins.

Important Note: While the purchase of most precious metals is exempt from sales tax in South Carolina, this exemption applies to the state sales tax. Some local jurisdictions may impose a local sales tax on these items.
