Grade Definition

MS 66 is the contraction for the denotation "Mint State Grade 65" which is part of the Sheldon grading system. Dr. W. H. Sheldon, a Psychologist as well as a numismatist, developed the scale more than 60 years ago to aid in the description of the condition of U.S. Large Cents. Few coins as old as a Peace Silver Dollar attain the MS 65 designation, and a coin in this condition is not only rare, it is more valuable than the same coin in a lower quality.

Specifics of the Grade

A Peace Silver Dollar in MS 65 started out from the U.S. Mint as a coin produced by dies of high quality. Any minting or strike anomalies will require magnification to detect. A Peace Dollar of this grade will have a nice amount of silver luster or sheen which is very pleasing to the trained and untrained eye alike. Silver may also show "Toning" which is visible as desirable coloring of the coin resulting from the natural tendency of the metal to react with elements that it comes in contact with over the years. Any marks or scratches will be smaller and fewer in number than a coin in a lower mint state. Common Date Peace Silver Dollars in this grade will trade at a significant amount over the price of silver in the retail market.
