$5 Indian Head Gold Coins MS 65

Grade Definition

MS 65 is the contraction for the denotation "Mint State Grade 65". This grade is part the Sheldon coin grading scale, which was developed by Dr. William H. Sheldon in 1949 to be applied to U.S. Large Cents, but was adapted to grade all U.S. coinage and is used today by PCGS and NGC, the two most reputable coin grading services in America.

Specifics of the Grade

A $5 Indian gold coin in MS 64 will be pleasing to the aided and un-aided eye, and any marks or scuffs will either be minute or in an inconspicuous area of the Indian's designs. Any defects by the U.S. Mint, or the minting process itself, will probably not be visible to the naked eye, but will require a low magnification and a trained eye to detect. If a $5 Indian achieves a grade of MS 64, it will carry a significant portion of it's market value because of it's condition, though of course the overall value will also be determined by the then current spot price of gold.
