Grade Definition

MS 66 is the contraction for the denotation "Mint State Grade 66" within the Sheldon coin grading system. Dr. William Herbert Sheldon,  a Psychologist as well as an avid numismatist, invented this scale in 1949 to be applied to U.S. Large Cents, but it was adapted to grade all U.S. coinage. Few coins are awarded the MS 65 designation, and a coin in this condition is rare, and it is more valuable than it's counterpart coin in a lower Mint State grade.

Specifics of the Grade

A $10 Indian gold coin in MS 65 was produced at the U.S. Mint as a coin of high strike quality (Not all coins are created in the same quality). Any errors or strike anomalies will require magnification to be seen. A $10 Indian of this grade will exhibit a very fair amount of "Mint luster" or "Golden shine" to it. Scuffs or scratches will be minute and few. The details of "Lady Liberty" in her Indian Chief headdress on the front of the coin, or the standing eagle design on the reverse of the coin, will be sharp and free of all but the lightest of wear.
