Blog Mar 13, 2014

Where can you buy gold coins? Almost anywhere that deals in precious metals, plus the internet, is the answer. But, perhaps a better question is; “Where can you buy buy gold coins that are real gold coins and not counterfeit, and that have a guarantee of authenticity, and better yet, where can I buy these gold coins – or even rare Double Eagle gold coins – that will buy these coins back from me at the best price when it comes time to realize my profits?” Like many things in life, buying gold coins, and especially buying numismatic coins online, is just a little more complicated once you delve a little deeper into the subject. This article-blog will look at common questions surrounding how to invest in gold coins and give you honest open insights into the answers to the question, “where can you buy gold coins?”

When You Buy Rare Gold Coins Online, Caveat Emptor, Or “Buyer Beware” Definitely Applies
The old saying “If it is too good to be true, it probably isn’t” certainly applies to buying numismatic gold coins online, and buying gold bullion coins online for that matter. I once took a class on authenticating numismatic gold coins, and rare Double Eagle gold coins. I flew to California and then spent days in a dark room staring through a microscope being taught what to look for when authenticating different types of rare gold coin and rare Double Eagle gold coin in particular. The instructors were full of extremely interesting information, and the value of the gold and silver coins the class participants were focusing on through the high-powered microscopes ranged into the millions of dollars. Perhaps the most startling fact I learned, and then witnessed by example, was how counterfeiters created a rare Double Eagle gold coin out of a Double Eagle gold coin that was legitimate, but common. The most important piece of information to pick up out of that last sentence is that a counterfeit rare gold coin can truly be a legitimate old solid gold coin, but when a counterfeiter changes the mint mark on a common coin to that of a much rarer gold coin, or Double Eagle gold coin, the perceived (or counterfeit) value can increase quite dramatically.

When You Buy Rare Gold Coins Online, This Is The Counterfeit Trick You Are Very Susceptible To
Most U.S. Mints mark the coins they produce with their “Mint Mark”. This means that somewhere in the design of the coin there is a single letter incorporated into the design struck into the coin. For instance, the Mint Mark for the San Francisco Mint is an “S”. A “D” denotes that a particular coin was struck at the Denver Mint. The Philadelphia Mint does not place a Mint Mark on the coins it produces, and this is where the story gets really interesting.
